He was never one for melancholy

I am copying a post from Kendra Vinal, who kept us informed of Alden Andrews’ journey last week, who somehow found it in herself to be able to include us in that passage.

'Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes, regardless of this disconsolate time. I wish that I could tell you that it was a great day, but it's definitely not a year for me to celebrate. My only wish would be to feel his arms around me again, but since time machines haven't been invented yet (although he would disagree) I instead wish to meet many of you that have reached out in the last few days with your kind words and loving support. His friends are my friends and I'd like to get to know you all more. No other wish. We both have friends but we became somewhat hermitty by choice, spending time with each other. I'll need friends again and welcome new ones.
I've needed to withdraw a little, not nearly chatty or responsive as I normally am, and I know that those that know me best are worried. Don't be. Obviously everyone handles grief in their own way, and for me, I just need to decompress. Kind of just going through the motions taking care of the things that need to be done, all in a stoic stupor. A functional haze, one mental assignment at a time. Is there even a right way?
It hasn't been officially decided yet, but because I want for every last person to be able to attend his service as he would've wanted, it's going to have to wait until this pandemic is over. Neither one of us would want to risk the health or safety of any one of you, even if we were actually allowed to have a mass gathering. More to come on that which I will probably post on here as well as the GoFundMe link. It will also be listed soon in the Portland Press Herald, the Bangor Daily, the Courier Gazette and the Camden Herald. Seriously though, I want everyone to celebrate the $#!+ out of him together because he would want that. Many tears will be shed, that's a given, but I hope that everyone will be able to find solace and even a laugh or two when it's over. He was never one for melancholy and I know he'd want for good times to be shared and had.
Thanks for reading my all-over-the-place banter. I'll talk at you all soon.' -Kendra Vinal

How can I walk by without loving what will be?

Dear Anonymous,
Our friend Tyler showed up briefly yesterday morning. It's a difficult and uncertain time and that is not making the streets any more stable. I worry there will be many more out here before this is all over.
He smiles. Allows me to see him and I remember Alden Andrews commenting on photos of folks on the street on not so good days. He said 'THAT WAS ME.' remarking on his own mighty struggles.
Alden passed away tragically this weekend, the result of profound injuries from a hit and run accident.

After surviving heroin addiction.

That beautiful young man who rose like a phoenix from a pile of ashes was able to build a life with people he loved, in community, with his child and family. No more street.
That beautiful man related to another young man, miserable on the street and said 'THAT'S ME.' identifying in those words the spectrum of his own path.
So, how can I walk by without loving what will be?

Thank you Dear Anonymous.

To this fellow traveler who dropped his earthly bonds last night.

To this fellow traveler who dropped his earthly bonds last night. I am so grateful to have known you. So grateful you offered your voice and thoughts to difficult things and helped provide me insight. So grateful for your humor, your heart and your sparkling brilliant blue eyes.
Deepest, deepest heart wrenching condolences to your family and loved ones. You are a lot to lose, my friend.
You will always be my og Pioneer of Recovery.
Thank you to this broad community for loving him even if you didn't know him. What a great outcome.
With love.

My prayer. Our prayers. And grief.

UPDATE
3/14/20 11:30PM
The 3rd cardiac arrest happened and we were in the ICU waiting room. The charge nurse came out explaining what was happening and advised that pretty much after the last one they were already concerned that there was extensive brain damage due to no circulation for over 10 minutes. His mother and I went into see him and the entire team still working on him. She had to make the call because we both knew he would not want that quality of life.

Alden lost his fight at 7:22pm this evening.

I do hope that everyone understands that the delay of this announcement was out of respect to our families, as they needed to hear it from us first and not through social media. We appreciate everyone's love and support throughout this terrible ordeal.

We will be sure to keep everyone updated with details of his Celebration of Life. From the bottoms of our hearts, we thank each and everyone of you for your daily prayers.

Prayers. My prayer. Alden Andrews I love you.

UPDATE
3/14/20 7:13PM
He flatlined again at 6:52pm. They continued to do CPR for over 10 minutes. His pulse has returned. My whole world stopped turning and all I could do was watch and pray harder than I ever have in my life, telling him to come back. We need him.
I'm beside myself. How will I ever sleep again? He's still with us guys. Don't give up on him âť¤

My prayer. A most difficult journey.

UPDATE
3/14/20 4:30PM
My apologies on the delayed update. I needed to go home to tend to affairs, see my children and gather things for my continued stay with Alden. He went into surgery at about 11:30am and he just got out several minutes ago. They did end up amputating his leg up to the pelvis. It's still open and packed but his bleeding should cease. I asked the orthopedic surgeon if it was possible to use any of the flesh from the severed leg to use as a skin graft. He said "that's a great question. I will follow up on that". So, more to come. He did say that the surgery went well. He was at extreme risk for cardiac arrest but he made it! He's one tough mother trucker! Hopefully this will alleviate the stress on his kidneys so that they can begin functioning again. He's currently getting resettled into the ICU and will need another transfusion. He will go into surgery again tomorrow to flush out the leg wound and ensure that there's nothing else dying. Things are looking up. I'll keep everyone updated. Keep the prayers coming! They're working! âť¤

Sometimes I feel like I am walking onto a Shakespearian performance during some late act in a play I don't really know the details of and didn't quite realize I'd be attending.

Dear Anonymous,
Sometimes I feel like I am walking onto a Shakespearian performance during some late act in a play I don't really know the details of and didn't quite realize I'd be attending.
There will tears. And tragic laughter. There will be love.
And loss. The great human dilemnas will make cameo appearances.
My own reason and logic do not apply here in the plot. There are sinister factors and conspiracies I could not imagine. No one is safe, I am told. And this is the habit of thinking. Sometimes I am challenged to keep my nose just clear of the sanity line as I listen.
A run in with the police. He says he has no idea why. Therefore he feels it is most unjust. Compellingly unjust.
I have absolutely no idea. I never will.
Still, there is a coffee card and socks.
Thank you Dear Anonymous.

It's a wonky world and the street this morning reflected the wonkiness.

Dear Anonymous,
It's a wonky world and the street this morning reflected the wonkiness. An overdose by a young man I don't know well. He survived. The police none too happy when I tried to see who it was. I can say they did great job at securing his privacy and anonymity, maybe less a great job at public relations.
The Reader, a man we know out here living on the streets who is also a voracious reader, had his bicycle hit by a truck when it was parked and locked at a telephone pole. Super glad he wasn’t ON it.
Everybody a bit edgy.
Coffee cards and loving admonishments 'to wash your hands.'
They are doing elbow taps and not handshakes.
The virus another stressor. ANOTHER inconvenience. ANOTHER thing to deal with.
And still there was love. Each of them signing off this morning with 'Love ya'.'
That hasn't been cancelled.

Friday morning at the MaineWorks circle often includes guests from the community.

Friday morning at the MaineWorks circle often includes guests from the community. This morning we were delighted to welcome Andy Lilienthal, from Camp Winnebago where "'Winnebagans' achieve extremely high results and campers understand the value that being supportive of each other makes, while gaining leadership experience, emotional intelligence, physical confidence and skills over the course of the summer."
What did Andy think of the circle? He referred to it as community. And community building is where growth can blossom. Thank you Andy for meeting us all.

If photographs are prayers, and posting is a vigil, here's another one for you, Alden.

If photographs are prayers, and posting is a vigil, here's another one for you, Alden. You're on one hell of a journey.
You survived the Opioid Epidemic.
Now you face yet another challenge of a lifetime.
But you're out of strong stuff woven.
With you in prayer....

Alden Andrews, formerly a MaineWorks employee was struck by a tractor trailer in Liberty, Maine this week.
He is in the hospital in critical condition. Updates available of his gofundme page posted below:

An update on Alden Andrews:

UPDATE
3/13/20 9:15am -
Your prayers are working! He continued to fight for his life and is still with us today. He's currently on dialysis to stabilize his labs. When it's completed and his blood pressure has restabilized he will be sent to the OR for his next surgery. Today the orthopedic surgeons will be cleaning up his mangled leg, putting pins in and assessing bloodflow to determine what can be saved. Life over limb. Please keep him in your thoughts today <3
From Kendra Vinal who is organizing the gofundme.

Sometimes someone offers more than I imagine they can. Willingly. Quietly. Without fanfare.

Sometimes someone offers more than I imagine they can. Willingly. Quietly. Without fanfare. But what I know he can offer, and does, are his intentions and his deepest desires for everyone to benefit. His prayers.
It is so often that the one with the least is willing to offer money in hand to give back. The one who is scraping the bottom who offers what they have with extraordinary generosity. With a heart as big as the ocean and as deep.

Your faith in the best outcome for us all is the gold I can accept. Really, a heart of gold.

If photographs can be prayers then I'm gonna be posting a lot of this guy.

If photographs can be prayers then I'm gonna be posting a lot of this guy. One of the original Pioneers of Recovery I met at MaineWorks four years ago.
In fact he was part of the group that inspired that reference to Pioneers. He was generous with his time and descriptions of his own journey and gave me great insight to the pain and loss of addiction...and the energy required to recover.

He was victim of a hit and run in Liberty, Maine last night. And remains in very, very tough shape. His brother is asking for prayers. I understand his condition is critical.
If photographs can be prayers you'll be seeing a lot of him. DAMN.

It is true that this guy, a Pioneer of Recovery that I met at MaineWorks four years ago is in very, very serious shape after a hit and run in Liberty, Maine.

It is true that this guy, a Pioneer of Recovery that I met at MaineWorks four years ago is in very, very serious shape after a hit and run in Liberty, Maine. Heartsick. Absolutely heartsick. If you are able to contribute there is a gofundme set up that will help he and his family. God knows he deserves the assistance.
Praying for you, buddy.....praying.
