On a busy commercial fishing wharf in Portland, Maine two osprey began to build a nest in 2016. Every morning during the season I would arrive before dawn and watch. And watch. And I was never disappointed. The nest is filled with the detritus of humans. They collected fish lines, bait bags, ropes, socks to build with along with mighty sticks and limbs. A copy of Old Henry’s classified ads is even tucked into the construction. The osprey have not inhabited the nest for the last two years after two years of building.
